What is IPL? What is Intense Pulsed Light?

There are many laser and light treatments available out there. This can make it difficult to tell the difference between them (and know which one is right for you). Our photofacials use intense pulsed light (IPL) technology to target pigment and blood vessels on the face. IPL treatments are quick, effective, and virtually pain-free. There is also little to no downtime after your IPL photofacial.

Those brown or tan spots on your face attract the light used in our IPL device and the light subsequently destroys the cells that make up these areas. This includes those tiny red or purple veins that you can get on your cheeks and the sides of your nose - as well as red moles!

What Can IPL Treat?

Here are a just a few of the common issues IPL treatments can address:

  • Dark spots caused by sun damage/age

  • Red moles

  • Broken capillaries/blood vessels on the face

  • Rosacea

  • Acne

  • Port wine stains

IPL treatments improve your overall skin tone and texture by targeting imperfections, pigment issues, and acne.

What to Expect From Your IPL Treatment

When you come in for your consultation, we will talk about all of the areas that bug you and come up with a treatment plan. At your first visit we will do a thorough skin assessment and evaluation to determine if IPL treatments will be helpful.

Our IPL photofacials have the ability to be extremely personalized - we take into account your skin tone, if you’ve had any sun exposure recently (AKA if you have a tan or not), and what areas we are targeting.

This means you will get the best results compared to other devices because we can focus on exactly what we want to treat - bringing you better results with shorter downtime.

We then cleanse your skin, have you put on eye protection goggles, and apply a clear, cool ultrasound jelly. The Nordlys uses advanced cooling technology thanks to a water filtration system making the treatments comfortable with little to no pain. This means we don’t need to use numbing cream like many of the older laser treatments require.

The treatment only takes 20-30 minutes once we get started and consists of moving the IPL handpiece around the face. Since it uses light energy, you will see a flash of light with each treatment.

Afterward - we will put a soothing cream on your face and some sunscreen and you can be on your way!

How Do I Prepare for My IPL Treatment?

3-4 weeks prior: avoid sun exposure as much as you can - wearing SPF and a wide-brim hat can help reduce sun exposure

1 week prior: stop retinol products and drink plenty of water

Is There Downtime with IPL Photofacials?

The great thing about the Nordlys system is there is very little downtime. You will probably experience some redness and slight flaking, but you don’t get the intense peeling or irritation many other laser treatments cause.

The pigmented (darker) areas we target will appear darker right after your treatment - this means we were able to target it properly. This can cause slight flaking of what looks like coffee grounds on the skin, but this will naturally exfoliate off within a few days.

You can return to normal activities after your IPL treatment - the main thing is to stay out of the sun or wear sunscreen and a wide-brim hat if you’re going to be outside. It takes a few weeks for your skin to fully heal and this makes it more sensitive to the sun.

How Many IPL Treatments Do I Need?

Most people benefit from a series of three treatments. These treatments are spaced out 3-4 weeks apart to allow for healing in between.

How Much Does IPL Cost?

At Vibrant Aesthetics, one IPL photofacial is $400.
If you purchase a package of 3 - you save $150 and only pay $1,050.
